CALL FOR PAPERS "1st International Conference on Sustainable Built Environment (ICSBE) "

1st International Conference on Sustainable Built Environment (ICSBE) PDF Print E-mail

CALL FOR PAPERS
1st International Conference on Sustainable Built Environment (ICSBE):
Enhancing Disaster Prevention and Mitigation
May 27-29, 2010
Islamic University of Indonesia, Jogjakarta, Indonesia

Introduction

At present, there has been a significant escalation in the number and variety of disasters happening worldwide, which have resulted in losses of human life and destructions of property. Many countries throughout the world are vulnerable to a wide variety of natural and man-made hazards and disasters.

A number of weather and water disasters, like flooding, landslides, hurricanes, abrasion, droughts, and many others remain a threat to many geographical regions on earth. Frequent natural disasters caused by plate tectonic and land movement, such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and tsunamis, are common things for numerous countries including those located in the Pacific Ring of Fire. Moreover, disasters at present have become closely connected with climate change. Extreme weather occurrences are likely to increase the number and scale of natural disasters.

Nowadays, the world also faces another form of hazards created by human being. Man-made disasters like this include human intentions, abandonment or failure of system, like industrial hazards, structural collapse, radiation contamination and so on. Furthermore, new emerging and re-emerging diseases causing an outbreak throughout the world become a peril. Conflicts in many areas causing civil disturbances, war, terrorism also poses a serious level of threat to life, health, property, or environment.

Many scientists argue that disasters are the result of inappropriately managed risks, produced by hazards and vulnerability. Various urban and rural areas worldwide are vulnerable to natural and man-made hazards with unparalleled frequency and scale. Management of built environment, comprising buildings, settlements and infrastructures, is therefore essential in the development of adequate precautionary measures to prevent and mitigate disaster vulnerability. It is also important to recognize and conserve valuable natural resources located in urban as well as rural areas that influence built environment in order to manage these risks.

Disaster mitigation involves different professions and different scientific fields from different regions throughout the world. It has turned out to be an indispensable measure for human, society and nature sustainable development. Therefore, the conference is expected to enhance prevention and mitigation as a basis for built environment planning involving multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research and application activities related to the threat of natural as well as man-made disasters.

Objectives

  • To share knowledge and experiences in built environment management focusing on natural and man-made disaster prevention and mitigation;
  • To examine existing theories and practices of built environment, particularly those related to disaster prevention and mitigation as well as post-disaster rehabilitation in order to evaluate problems and propose alternative solutions;
  • To develop tools, methods and mechanisms of architecturally, structurally, and environmentally responsible approaches to pre-disaster preparedness and potential risks lessening, as well as post-disaster reduction and rehabilitation, to serve as a basis for policy development appropriate with local or regional characters;
  • To develop research strategies and techniques to deal with real world problems in disaster mitigation and post-disaster recovery

SEMINAR NASIONAL BASIC SCIENCE VII

Keynote Speakers
  1. Dr. Malcolm D. McLeod
